Honest to God snow reports...
Remarkables / Coronet Peak
Both Coronet Peak and The Remarkables are closed today as there is so much snow! It's dumping, with 25cms over night and heaps more to come. It's snowing down to Lake level meaning that town is pretty chaotic as chains are needed. Bring on tomorrow and the powder! Woooooow!
Treble Cone
Masses of fresh powder for TC opening day today, and more forecast over the weekend. Lots of free champagne and live music to celebrate the first runs too.
Treble Cone
20cm of snow at TC last night. Had a few sneaky runs today and it's looking good for a partial opening tomorrow (Friday).
Wanaka
Cardrona Cardrona s season is shaping up well. Overnight they received 10cm to 15 cm of new fresh snow. This now makes a total snow base of 55cm on the upper mountain and 35cm base on the lower mountain. Monday and Tuesday were the first few bluebird days that attracted a lot more people to the mountain. The next couple of days are expecting a strong northwesterly wind and some light snow. The Roads Wanaka police are warning those traveling to the mountain to take extreme caution. The roads are extremely icy up until 10.30 am and many cars have been loosing traction. Snow Park At present Snow Park has only set up a basic jib line. They have all their snow guns on, mostly pointing towards the pipe. They hope to get the rest of the park up and running soon.
Remarkables
The Remarks is open! The snow was surprisingly good and dry today and there are plenty of rails and boxes in the park. Coronet has it's official opening of it's new base building on Saturday by Prime Minister Helen Clark - they have had the snow guns going over the last few days and coverage is pretty good on some of the trails.
Treble Cone
TC opening day postponed as they struggle to build a decent base. Snow cannons are working at full speed and hoping to open on Wednesday.
Mt Hutt
The mountain closed early yesterday due to a cold front coming in from the south east which brought 40 cm of new snow with it. Snow making was working all day in conjunction with this to buff up base levels. The mountain was closed due to bad weather again today and snow continued to fall last night, today and is still snowing tonight. The forecast for tomorrow is for the weather to clear so hopefully we will have a fresh powder day. Meanwhile the mood in Canterbury is mixed as many people appreciate the snowfall but we are all chomping at the bit to get up there and get riding. Weather forecasts are for still more snow this week so hopefully we will get a build up on the base and some freshies in. Rumour has it the big park will soon be opening and a Sunday special is on the cards so lets hope that materialises. Towers, one of the more difficult runs on the upper mountain opened mid last week and hopefully south face will soon be open for some brilliant off piste.
Coronet Peak / Remarks
The Peak is open! Last night was cold enough to make snow at Coronet Peak plus it snowed today and flurries are set to continue over the next few days. The weekend looks like it should be clear and hopefully The Remarkables will be opening soon.
Mt Hutt
Fresh snow but fresh wind oh no closed for today.
Cardrona- Wanaka
Prayers Answered in Wanaka Relief was felt yesterday among Wanaka locals and seasonaires alike. After a drought of snow and unusually warm conditions, which saw a massive amount of snow melt, a cold front came in which provided much needed snow. Snow Conditions At Cardrona Extensive snowmaking has been underway in Cardrona since Monday, and 20cms of freshies have fallen on Monday and Tuesday, to add to the snow base and the resort plans to open as scheduled on Friday 27 th June. The Opening will also see Helen Clark, New Zealands Prime Minister, open the New Captains Express chairlift at the resort. The new facility is part of an NZ$8 million investment plan scheme. With more predicted snow on the way, morale is high. Ski resorts are preparing to open and are getting themselves ready for the busy school holidays that commence in early July. With temperatures dropping dramatically, it looks like a good start to the Southern hemispheres season.
