Spainintropic The Pyrenees are beautiful and the food and people great. But you will be lucky to get snow anywhere near the quality of North America or the Alps – strong sun, sea mists, wind and rain all take their toll. However, there has been a massive investment in infrastructure in recent years and the resorts, particularly in Aragon, are very well equipped and in mid-winter – with the right conditions – can offer world-class skiing and boarding at relatively keen prices. There are several first-class resorts near the Val d'Aran, such as Port-Aine, Boi-Taull and Basqueira-Beret. And in Aragon check out Formigal and Cerier. There is a focus on beginners, but some good off-piste as well. The quality of the food, particularly on the mountain, knocks spots off that at most Alpine resorts.

Spain is one of the leading tourist destination for Brits, but for some reason we swerve just north of the Spanish border into Andorra when we come to book our ski trips. Historically, this was because the duty free principality was the cheaper option, but with Andorran lift passes now on a par with some of the pricier resorts in the Alps that’s no longer the case.
