Snow report: It's bitterly cold but conditions are good!
Monday, 13 February 2012 17:11
It’s been a chilly, nay bitter, start to the half term holidays as temperatures reached ridiculously low levels across the Alps over the weekend. And the mercury looks set to stick around -15ºC for the next few days, occasionally reaching -20ºC. Great temperatures for keeping the snow in good knick and mountain restaurants in a roaring trade in hot chocolates and vin chauds. Thankfully, there isn’t much wind forecast to worsen those below freezing temperatures.
Brave the bitter cold though and you’ll find excellent conditions in nearly every resort. Pretty much everywhere across the Alps has seen a few cms of snow fall in the past three days, but no further snow is forecast until a front starts to sweep in on Wednesday across Austria and Switzerland, hitting France and Italy by Wednesday evening and lingering through to Thursday morning, but only delivering a smattering (up to 5cm) of fresh snow before clearing up for the end of the week.
Here’s our pick of the best resorts currently – while these may have headline-grabbing amounts of snow, the best thing about this season is that pretty much wherever you go in the Alps, you’ll be in for some great conditions.
France
Chamonix has the greatest snow depth currently – a staggering 4.2m, and is reporting packed powder. Alpe d’Huez is also a safe bet, with 3.5m of snow and similarly packed powder pistes.
Austria
St Anton has been having an incredible season, and its amazing snow is showing no sign of abating – currently recording a huge 4.7m and powder snow, with a further few cms forecast for Wednesday, it’s the place to head to in Austria. The rest of the Arlberg resorts aren’t looking too bad either, including Lech as you can see from the image above!Switzerland
Engelberg is matching St Anton for snow depth, at 4.7m, and has fantastic conditions across all of its slopes. Crans Montana, Laax and Gstaad are also in great shape, and most resorts are set to receive a few more cms of snow on Wednesday.
Italy
La Thuile, on the border with France, has the strongest conditions currently, with 3.8m of snow and powder snow reported. Breuil-Cervinia is also looking good, with 2.9m of snow on its upper slopes. Are you on the slopes? Let us know how things are in resort by adding your comments below.
