This year’s now traditional season-opening Top of the Mountain concert in the Austrian resort of Ischgl on November 29 will feature British folk-rock singer James Blunt.
james blunt to open austrian ski season
The keen skier, whose big hit You’re Beautiful burst onto the charts almost a decade ago, will sing new songs from his current Moon Landing album tour, including Bonfire Heart and Postcards.

Blunt first hit the big time in 2005 after a spell in the British army during which he captained the Household Cavalry alpine ski team. His ballad You’re Beautiful made him the first British artist since Elton John to top the US charts and in the same year he bought a chalet in the Swiss resort of Verbier.

Since then Blunt has co-founded a restaurant called La Vache on the mountain and calls Verbier his home.

Previous stars who have appeared at the Top of the Mountain gigs – a second gig also marks the end of the ski season – include Mariah Carey, Lionel Richie, Katy Perry and Elton John.

The big name at the closing concert in 2014 was Robbie Williams, who played to an audience of approximately 25,000.

Entry to the event in the Silvretta Arena ski resort is free with a valid ski pass, which will set you back 60 Euro (£48) for one day or 88 Euro (£70) for two days.

The resort’s lifts will actually open two days earlier on November 27, giving access to 238km of groomed pistes, with the concert beginning at 6pm on the 29th.

Rock the Pistes

If the idea of combining concerts with ski resorts is your thing (but James Blunt isn’t) try the Portes de Soleil Rock the Pistes series of concerts. Typically run over five days in the 12 French-Swiss resorts of the Portes du Soleil in late March.
