Heavy snowfalls delivered a blanket of powder to the northern Alps late last week, freshening up the pistes ahead of the weekend. In Canada, Banff, Lake Louise and Whistler received another dump of well over a half a metre on Friday but the US largely missed out on the latest snow.

Europe's most significant falls were in France, Switzerland and western Austria. More snow is expected across Alps over the next week. In St Anton, where the latest Women's FIS World Cup race took place on Sunday, conditions were described as perfect after Fridays 20cm fall. Lech, Kaprun, Ischgl and Kitzbuhel all received fresh powder. Conditions Les Arcs France Jan13th

Switzerland fared particularly well with very few resorts missing out: Verbier and Zermatt both received over 40 centimetres of fresh and there are excellent conditions all round, although off-piste is becoming tracked in some resorts.

In France it's still snowing in La Plagne, Les Arcs, Avoriaz and Tignes and in Argentiere there's been over 50 centimetres of snow in the last week. Nearly all resorts are reporting good or excellent conditions.

Despite missing out on the lastest snow Italy's pistes are still holding up well. Snow is forecast for the coming week across the Italian Alps and the Dolomites.

Canada's bumper season continues. The new year brought widespread new snow across British Colombia and Alberta. The total snow fall to date in Whistler is now 640cm.
