use your headEssential Travel has announced skiers and snowboarders will only be covered by their winter sports insurance policies if they wear a helmet. The company says it is the first in the UK to insist their customers wear helmets on the slopes.

‘Whilst it is true that a helmet does not reduce all sports injury, it seriously reduces the risk of potentially fatal injuries,’ said Stuart Bensusan, Essential Travel’s head of sales. ‘That alone warrants making wearing helmets compulsory, and we choose to completely support safety conscious skiers by rewarding them with reduced premiums and bonus discounts.’

Research by the company found that 77 per cent of skiers and snowboarders now wear helmets – an increase of 15 per cent from 2010. Those who don’t wear helmets will risk invalidating their winter sports insurance policy.

The company says that by making helmets mandatory, they are able to offer a 15 per cent discount on insurance policies as well as discounts with Neilson Holidays, Ellis Brigham, Tail-Wags and Facewest. They will also be donating £1 from every policy bought to brain injury charity Headwise.
