Good looks, reasonable price
No inner pockets, hood lacks proper adjustment

The strangely monikored Volcom Mail Ins is another good value option if you're looking for one jacket for all purposes, since its understated urban styling means you can confidently wear it both at home through the winter and on the slopes.

The jacket uses Volcom's 'V-Science' two-layer breathable and waterproof outer shell combined with taped seams in critical areas to keep you dry, and a lovely, soft fleece lining paired with low-loft insulation to keep you warm. Should you get too warm there are mesh-backed pit zips to help you cool down.

It has a huge lined hood which is okay with a helmet but too 'flappy' if you're not wearing a lid, and a snug, fleece-lined collar beneath this to pretty much keep all of your head away from the cold.

You get one chest pocket with a Velcro fastening and two zipped hand warmer pockets, but no internal pockets. This is a minor let down as inside your jacket is a much better place for storing valuables, phones etc. than in an outer pocket.

A powder skirt with a jacket/pant 'interface' rounds the whole lot off, and it has a loose enough cut that you can layer up comfortably beneath it, so combined with the jacket's own insulation it's not hard to stay warm.

All said, and despite our minor criticisms, the Mail Ins is a warm, versatile jacket at a decent price.
