One of our top skis in the 2016-17 test, we were keen to see if Salomon had altered the Gemma in any way 17-18 - or did they stick with a tried and well tested ski?

Good, strong performance all over the mountain.
Lose grip and stability when carving at higher speeds

Salomon have got a real winner with the Gemma. Capable of covering the whole mountain, the Gemma combines enough new technology with its unique 3D shaping and classic wood cores to produce fun, lively skis.

You can see the innovative Control Frame technology where the edges of the skis have been beefed up in the front and behind the heel to provide stiffness and edge grip where you need it, but leaving the centre clear to save on weight. This shaping means there is a consistent flex through the skis, keeping the ride super smooth.

On-piste, despite the 85mm width underfoot, they feel super grippy and stable with good edge control at all speeds - remarkably solid on shorter radius turns with the use of cork underfoot, dampening vibrations. As soon as you've set off they feel comfortable and easy to ride, perfect for using all day and as your energy, speed and terrain changes, they seem to respond with you.

There is real value for money too at £520 with bindings included and as they are ready for all but the very deepest powder snow conditions, their versatility means they easily fit as a one ski does it all contender.

Solid performance on-piste as long as you aren't a die-hard racing demon and plenty of responsiveness on the variables - they are perfect for the advanced female skier who wants more than just a girly ski.
