Volkl's Code skis are its piste-orientated range that sits just below the full-on Racetiger series.
The Bavarian company describes the Racetigers as "uncompromisingly competitive" and the Codes as "uncompromisingly sportive", which in the grand scheme of things means the Codes should hold more appeal for strong, advanced skiers who know how to work their skis but don't want to be 'on it' 100% of the time.
But while in comparison the Codes are a touch toned down, don't for one minute think that these are anything less than high-performing piste-munchers, as they eat ice for breakfast and snack on hard-pack for lunch.
The Code UVOs we were given to test were the Red ones and sit nicely in the middle of a range that runs from the entry Code UVOe, through Orange, Red, Speedwall S, Speedwall L and V-Werks Speedwall.
Volkl may have picked "uncompromisingly" as its buzz-word for the new season, but there is a happily wide choice for skiers in construction, performance and price.
The Reds have a Sensor Wood Core married with the use of steel, a full sidewall and a touch of rocker in tip and tail that has good drive out of short turns and is smooth on transitions in longs.
This is a ski that has great torsional stiffness and with Volkl's UVO technology (which stands for Ultimate Vibration Object and is the rubbery object embedded in the nose that is designed to minimize disruptive ski vibration) produces a lovely stable ride.
