Volkl's RTM label stands for 'Ride The Mountain' and the 81 sits nicely in the middle of the range that runs from 75mm to 86mm width underfoot.
Although marketed as All Mountain rides, the RTMs - in common with the majority of skis in this ever-expanding category - are primarily frontside skis with the ability to handle a variety of conditions beyond pristine groomed slopes.
The perceived wisdom is that you choose more width for skiing off-piste, and conversely narrower skis for a little more piste performance. The RTM 81 bucks this somewhat, as its slightly softer construction than the 84 and 86 means it feels a little lighter and playful in the soft stuff.
It needs to be stressed at this point that the previous assessment is only in comparison to its bigger brothers - this ski is no pussy cat, it's got a tiger in the tank that will spit and scratch if you don't give it the effort and direction it requires and deserves.
The RTM 81 is modest and understated on the rack but speaks loudly underfoot, with great response and drive out of turns on piste and an edge hold that was comforting on a very icy morning during testing.
The distinctive elevated ridge along the spine of the ski provides torsional stiffness and stability, while camber underfoot and the use of steel laminate means the ski wants to spring back into shape once pressure is released during transition.
The tip and tail rocker present in its 128-81-109 dimensions means the RTM 81 has enough width and float to enjoy off-piste forays.
With bindings included, the RTM 81 is a very usable, great performing ski for under the £600 mark.
