An integral part of Austria's giant Skicircus ski area, Fieberbrunn is both a family favourite destination and a red-hot spot for freeriders. From the Fieberbrunn piste map to the best ski hire, ski schools and apres-ski bars, here's the ringside seat to this Skicircus act.

Fieberbrunn was once a relatively quiet, self-contained resort, but since its 2015/16 link-up to the Skicircus, it is now a great base for exploring the wider ski area. The village itself is quiet and traditionally Tyrolean, making it an attractive destination for families and beginners. Conversely, in recent years, Fieberbrunn has developed a reputation as a freeriding hotspot thanks to its challenging terrain and excellent powder. It also has a Freeride Park – perfect for powder-play. Once a year the world's best freeriders gather in Fieberbrunn for the Freeride World Tour.

The local ski area's top lift height of 2,020m is not high compared to many famous Alpine resorts, or the 38km of runs particularly large, but the area benefits from legendary snow cover thanks to the local microclimate - which gives it the most average annual snowfall in the Kitzbühel Alps. The resort itself is about 5 minutes away from the ski lifts by ski bus although there is accommodation spread along the road between the two and you can stay on or near the slopes.

And, of course, it benefits hugely from being part of the Skicircus – one of the largest ski areas of Austria.

Fieberbrunn - Ski Map & Pistes:

Fieberbrunn is so much more than a small resort. It's part of the Skicircus Saalbach Hinterglemm Leogang Fieberbrunn – the name given to the winter sports area in the Austrian states of Salzburg and Tyrol. It extends on both sides of the valley over the mountains of the Glemmtal and links the four local ski areas of Saalbach, Hinterglemm, Leogang and Fieberbrunn.

With 270 kilometres of ski slopes it is one of the largest ski areas in Austria. Beginners, families and experts can use 140 km blue, 112 km red and 18 km of black slopes. With 70 cableways and lifts, numerous snow parks, a freeride park, floodlit slopes and toboggan runs, the Skicircus skiing region is one of the most diverse and best ski areas in the Alps, with masses of cruisey runs for intermediate skiers to get stuck into. One of the undoubted highlights of the ski area for top-end intermediates and advanced skiers is The Challenge – a 65km ski circuit taking you around the whole SkiCircus in around seven hours. Clocking up 32 lifts and 12,400m in height along the way, it’s probably the longest of its kind in the Alps.

You can also top up the mileage with a Ski Alpin lift pass that gives you access to the slopes of Zell am See and Kaprun, making an available ski area of 407km (albeit it's a heck of a trek to get back to Fieberbrunn, which is at the extreme other end of this enlarged domain!)

Fieberbrunn - Off-Piste, Backcountry & Ski Touring:

Fieberbrunn trades extensively on its status as a 'Freeride Mekka'. The slopes of the 2,119m Wildseeloder were explored by the up-and-coming freeriding scene some years ago now, and the resort has been quick to cash in. Fieberbrunn has ideal snow conditions for off-piste skiing and snowboarding: it's a ski area with wild contours and extensive powder slopes. Additionally, you'll not find you need long walks to access the freeriding terrain. With all this in mind, the Skicircus stages various freeride camps and workshops, and local ski schools and mountain guides readily cater for for freeriders of all ages and abilities.

Ski tourers will find much to enjoy here too, with several off-road tours of the Wildseeloder, Platte and Mahdstein terrain.

Fieberbrunn - Restaurants, Bars & The Town:

Fieberbrunn’s an authentic mountain village – nestled among trees, local shops and restaurants line the streets, and a pretty church stands at the heart of the village. It’s quiet here in the evenings, so your best bet for some apres are the bars near the gondola, such as S4 Alm or Biwak 2.0. And as for places to stay, there's not a lot of choice, but the food and facilities - especially for families - are generally excellent.

For those all-important pit-stops during the ski-day, try Wildalpgatterl. At the top of the Zillstadt lift, it's something of a culinary hot-spot and is great for sampling Tyrolean specialities. Other good tips include the restaurant at S4 Alm, while the award-winning Pulvermacher Hut is a popular stop for skiers and tourers right on the Vierstadl slope.

For off-slope downtime take in the splash pools and slides at Aubad water park. For some high-speed family fun, don't miss Timok's Alpine Coaster at the Streuböden mid-station.

Fieberbrunn - Ski Hire:

There are several options in Fieberbrunn for hiring ski equipment. Check out Intersport Gunther if you're in the centre, or Sport 2000, Kogler Sport, and Widmann Sports (also a local ski school) at the valley station of the Bergbahnen. Finally, there's also S4 Snowsport, which also runs ski courses.

Fieberbrunn - Ski School:

For beginners and advanced skiers alike, Fieberbrunn's ski schools cater well to all abilities. Choose from Ski School Widmann (particularly good for kids), S4 Snowsport, and, for freeriders especially, Fun Connection and the Harasser Alpine Ski School.
