Located in the Central Cascades area which is made up of nine peaks and three mountains passes. Enjoying over 360 inches of light, dry powder snow annually its not surprising that this area is the winter playground of choice for the majority of Oregon's inhabitants. The Cascades are textbook volcano mountains, standing cone-like above rolling plains. Mt Bachelor's conical shape dictates a fairly even pitch for skiers but whats really fun about the mountain is that the ski trails follow the actual path down the mountainside that the lava at one time took. This adds an extra dimension to the skiing with twisting, roller coaster trails which the piste groomers can maximise to provide skiing which can in places resemble white water kayaking! The Central Cascades form a barrier against the flow of moist air from the Pacific Ocean and this keeps the annual precipitation to only 12 inches so the snow here is very dry and even in spring-like conditions it never seems to become mushy, it just gets more skiable. Nestled at the base of Mt Bachelor and the Three Sisters, the resort areas of Bend, Sunriver and Sisters form the hub of a gamut of winter activities as well as providing accommodation for skiers. Bend, the closest town to Mt Bachelor has practically doubled its population in the last 10 years - such is its popularity as a retirement venue. Set on the western edge of the high desert, Bend offers an Arizona-like climate without the blazing summers. Sunriver, the other nearby town was at one time a World War II army installation but today its a major northwest vacation centre and home to 1,100 permanent residents and the site of a 4-star resort. It has golf on 2 championship courses, tennis on 28 courts and miles of biking and jogging trails. Further to the north the town of Sisters will give you a glimpse of the Old West with its western storefronts and boardwalk. This is one of those ski resorts which, during spring and early summer, offers the unique blend of skiing in the morning and a choice of golf, tennis or watersports in the afternoon. Only 35km/22 miles/20 minute drive from Bend and Sunriver, this 9,065ft/2763m peak is one of the West's premier ski resorts with 70 runs, 10 lifts (including 7 express chairs), and a 3,365ft vertical drop (one of America's biggest). Transworld Snowboarding voted Mt Bachelor one of the top five snowboard resorts in North America for its natural, boarder-friendly terrain. With 56 km of groomed cross-country trails, innovative youth programs and dog sled rides, its easy to see why this resort attracts over half a million skiers and boarders every season and why the US Ski Team chose it has their training ground for over 25 years. Mr Bachelor's ski season is long, usually starting around Thanksgiving Day (late November) and lasting well into the summer.

Arguably the leading North Western American resort with seven express quad chairs, a huge 3700 acres of skiable terrain and a big 3686 foot vertical (one of North America's biggest). Mount Bachelor has a remarkable record of receiving enough natural snowfall to continuing the ski season up to July. Lifts run from 0800 to 1600 weekends and holidays.

Mountain

Mt Bachelor has over 3,683 acres of challenging terrain filled with bowls, glades and steep lava chutes. This is a typically volcanic looking mountain with its perfect conical shape providing the perfect pitch for skiers. Many of the trails follow the path the lava would have taken down the mountain which makes for some interesting twisting, turning, roller coaster terrain. Its quite clear why Ski Magazine readers in the US annually vote Mt Bachelor's lift system the best in North America - it includes 7 high speed quad chairs. Ski Magazine readers also voted the mountain in the North American top ten for glade skiing. Glade skiing areas are open patches between groups of trees and typically offer wide open, uninterrupted powder skiing. The Northwest Territories, Outback and South Side of the Summit provide skiers with excellent glade skiing as well as the many hidden locations which are off the beaten path. Mt Bachelor has 6 separate day lodge facilities for mountain dining and a good variety of cuisine. Scapolo's (Italian for Bachelor) is the newest mountain restaurant serving gourmet pizzas with spectacular mountain views while the cosy log cabin style Cafe in the Cross Country Centre focus on food for energy serving soups, pastas and deli sandwiches. The Cross Country Center at Mount Bachelor offers over a dozen trails, varying in length from 1K to 12K, with 56K of machine groomed tracked trails.

There are planned activities to entertain children throughout the day including storytime, movietime and crafts. Children over 4 years could have combination daycare which includes a 1/2 day lesson as well as the usual play activities. Daycentre caregivers will assist with ski rentals, escort your child to lessons and provide lunch. Mt Bachelor run several youth ski programs for children from 5 years up to 16 year olds, theres Junior Mighty Mites for the 5 to 8 year olds with a minimum requirement that they can ride the lift, stop and do linked turns. Mighty Mites for the 8 to 11 years age range requires that they can ride lifts and be comfortable on intermediate slopes whilst the MTV (More Terrain and Vertical) is an advanced program for 10 to 16 year olds who should be comfortable on groomed black runs. Children are grouped by their skill ability and emphasis is placed on terrain safety and mountain awareness in all the programs.

The mountain itself has natural gullies, chutes and lava bowls as well as four excellent terrain parks with design input from professional boarders. The more advanced snowboard lessons are taught in the terrain park, a great way to sharpen your skills or just to have fun on the many features which include wall hits and fun boxes which should please even the most extreme rider.
