Abetone has been a tourism destination for as long as anyone can remember, first in the summer than in the winter, with the first ski lift installed in 1936. In the 1950s Zeno Colo and Celina Seghi' success in the Olympics and World Cup events confirmed the resort's status as a major ski destination and it remains today the most important ski resort of the Centre of Italy.
Abetone is a good place in which to fully appreciate the beauty of the Apennines. If you take the Monte Gomito ski lift, you'll find yourself on the top of a ridge crest, with all of Emilia extending gracefully in one direction, and much of Tuscany in the other.
The ski slopes are cut through the beautiful State owned woodland rich in firs, larches and pines. Indeed the resort, located near the border between Tuscany and Emilia Romagna, to a giant fir cut down in the 18th century to build a road joining the Tuscany Grand Duchy to the Estensi's lands. Two monuments record the achievement of building the road and resort today remains very atmospheric.
The famous road makes Abetone easy to reach from many towns and cities in the area, especially Florence, so it tends to be very busy at weekends. If you can visit during the week you'll find the slopes much less crowded.
Some criticise the snow in the resort as being not as good as at other ski areas in the Apennines due to the slope orientation and proximity to the sea., but others dispute this and besides there is extensive snowmaking.
One of the longest established and best known ski centres in central Italy. The village itself has a wide range of facilities including typical Tuscan restaurants and pizzerias.

The ski slopes spread out between four linked valleys: Val di Luce, Valle dello Scoltenna, Valle del Sestalone and Valle di Lima. These valleys form one of the most beautiful, famous and natural settings of the Apennines. At 1,800 metres, on a good day, the pistes at Abetone really are great.
Starting from Selletta you can ski on the black slope of Sestaione and reach Foce di Campolino; or again from Selletta, ski on Monte Gomito's slopes and on those of Faitello before continuing on towards Val di Luce. From there you can go back up to Alpe Tre Potenze , a landscape recalling the Alps, nearly 2000m high.
It is also possible to practice long-distance skiing on two ring-shaped tracks that stretch for a total of 15km.
Other trails graded black are 'Rossa' number 5 and 'Nera' number 26 which is usually left un pisted so that mogul fields develop to make it still more challenging. Several blue and red runs including number 4 (Sassi Scritti) and 34 (Tre Valli) are treated the same way.
The famous slalom champion Zeno Colo is a great hero of the resort and there are three runs, Zeno 1, Zeno 2, and Zeno 3, honoured in his name.
It has moreover strengthened the snowfall using one hundred cannons.
Abetone is a good choice for families with its friendly base and family ski slopes. The local ski school takes children for special classes and has baby parking at its location on Piazzas Piramidi. Special deals are available on lodging and lift tickets, particularly in the low season and there are good restaurants and hotels particularly suited to family groups.
You'll also find great runs for snowboarders in the Val di Luce where a series of ski lifts take you to the different sides of this enormous valley. The new Abetone terrain park, a state-of-the-art facility boasts half-pipe and three metre jumps for the pleasure and thrill of daring snowboarders.
