OK, it’s been around for a long time, but it’s time for the whispering to end, and the shouting from mountain-tops to begin – Italy’s best-kept secret should be secret no more.

With 800km of pistes served by 160 lifts, this winter playground has a lot to offer. And with links to other resorts too, you’ll never get bored: La Thuile links to La Rosière in France; from Courmayeur you can get to Chamonix; from Champoluc and Gressoney you can ski Alagna; and from Cervinia you can reach Zermatt.

For beginners there’s plenty of gentle slopes. Meanwhile, intermediates are truly spoilt for choice, with glorious cruising reds, gentle off-piste for those taking their first jaunt beyond marked trails, and wide open bowls. Experts will love the ferocious steep terrain, and the powder opportunities are immense – especially when you add heliskiing into the mix. As it’s generally not available in most other Alpine resorts, heliskiing is one of the valley’s biggest attractions. Drops are possible in all the major resorts – and compared to elsewhere, the cost is fantastic.
