Sitting at the heart of the 4 Vallées, Nendaz is a great family resort and the ideal base for exploring Switzerland’s biggest ski domain.

With snow guaranteed from December to April, Nendaz is a snow sure choice for a winter holiday, in the spectacular the Swiss Alps.

Located at 1,365m between Verbier, Thyon and Veysonnaz, it’s a large, modern resort with wonderful views overlooking the Rhone Valley. It has direct access to 410km of runs, some fantastic freeride, guaranteed snowfall and skiing up to 3,330m. Although lift-linked to its famous neighbour Verbier, Nendaz is altogether more ‘grounded’, with everything from accommodation to restaurants being far more reasonably priced.

The resort particularly cherishes its coveted ‘Family Destination’ label, awarded in 1997 and families will especially enjoy the range of non-ski activities, including tobogganing, fitness centre, signposted winter walks, seven snowshoe itineraries and loads of events all winter long. There is also the 2,200m2 Spa des Bisses with its wide range of wellness attractions.

Of the area’s slopes, 33% are blue, 53% red and 14% black, and there are 4 ski touring routes for different levels. But for experts, the big attraction of this area is the seven Freetrack itineraries, including Eteygeon, Plan-du-Fou, Mont-Fort, Chassoure and Mont-Gelé. The highest point of the ski area is Mont-Fort at 3,330m, which offers an amazing 360degree view over the Alps and famous summits such as the Matterhorn.

When it comes to après, Nendaz caters for quieter, more down-to-earth souls. But there are some lively bars, a couple of nightclubs and plenty of reasonably-priced restaurants.

Access to this lesser-known corner of the Valais region is pretty good, too. Although there is an airport at Sion just 20 minutes away, it’s only a two-hour transfer from Geneva.
