A brand new ski from Salomon aimed at an all-mountain rider who mainly likes to stay on the front side of the hill with the occasional foray off the sides. They're labelled 'advanced', but would easily suit someone looking to progress with their skiing as we discovered on test in Austria.

The X Drive range from Salomon is set up for the all mountain skier who likes to stay mainly on groomed slopes, but occasionally dips into the powder when conditions suit.

The 8.0 is suited more towards smoother surfaces, is easy to turn and has excellent edge grip on hard-packed surfaces. 'But they're also fun in the moguls, handy on groomed slopes and lively in the shallow chopped up powder by the sides of the run', said one of our testers.

However, another commented: 'They are easy to turn, but felt a bit shaky at higher speeds. I think they would suit an intermediate skier looking to really progress with their carving turns and try out a little off-piste now and again.'

Conclusion - a good all round ski that's perfect for someone looking to purchase their first pair or want something superior to the standard rental options in resort.
