For many, Austria ticks all the boxes – picture-book-pretty mountain villages, wonderful skiing and boarding, first-class accommodation and exuberant après ski. But it is worth noting that most of the resorts are quite low and often involve a crowded gondola ride up to the ski area, or even a bus journey at the start and end of the day. The food is solid and hearty but doesn’t offer much for non-meat eaters. Two of the country’s four big glaciers (Kitzsteinhorn and Hinterux) offer year-round skiing, while the other two (Solden and Stubaital) guarantee snow from November to May.
