Warm and good looking
Expensive

This is Patagonia's warmest merino base layer, made from sustainably sourced wool from the grasslands of Patagonia, which are then blended with the company's well-established Capilene fibre.

It's far from cheap at a hundred quid but as we all know, sustainable production costs extra, and you certainly get a very nice garment in return for all your hard-earned.

The jersey knit feels both soft and smooth next to your skin and has a reassuringly 'heavy' feel, despite not being especially weighty, making it a go-to item for colder days in the mountains. You can even wear it with a thinner base layer underneath for additional warmth.

The zip is long enough to provide good venting on warmer days, or when hiking for your turns, while in cold conditions little things like the elevated collar, thumb loops and a longer cut hem help to keep the chills at bay.

On top of this it's a good looking base layer which we were also happy to wear in non-outdoorsy situations, so although it's expensive you can get wear out of it both in and out of the mountains.
