Atomic appear to have been focussing on their piste and backcountry offerings for 2019/2020 as the freeride category consists of a mere two models; both Bent Chetler pro models.
The 100mm model has some very good looking graphics and while it doesn't compare with the Backland range in terms of weight, it certainly isn't heavy. Small cutaways at the tip and tail may help slightly, but the light wood core is mainly responsible. Combined with the relatively low price, you'd be forgiven for thinking there isn't a whole load of tech going on in this ski. Not necessarily a bad thing, especially when you realise what it's designed for.
This is an out and out charger. It's not very playful and there is barely a nod to piste skiing. This is a full on, straight lining, hooning freeride ski. That kind of sledgehammer perhaps needs little sophistication, hence the fairly low price, but £430 still represents a pretty good deal for those that want a powerful shredder.
To many though, the Bent Chetler 100 will come off as a bit one dimensional. There are other skis that can charge just as hard, but can also offer a bit of personality too. Then again, they generally cost 50% more.
In the right hands, or feet in the case of Chris Benchetler, this ski could do great things, but for mere mortals there are better freeride skis on offer.
