We skiers can be creatures of habit. We find a resort we like, with slopes we can comfortably ski, a bar or two we love to hang out in, maybe even an apartment or hotel where we know how everything works. So, we keep going back.
And there’s nothing really wrong with that. We’ve probably all done it. We call such resorts ‘our happy place’. But when you’re ready to discover new slopes, new bars, new places to stay and new experiences to try, it’s nice know someone has your back.
That’s where Peak Retreats comes in. They’re always on the lookout for new holidays and resorts to offer their guests. So, if you’re ready for a new happy place, you’re ready for skiing in Pralognan-la-Vanoise.
Pralognan-la-Vanoise: Where authenticity matters
This little-known French alpine resort offers a more authentic way to experience the French Alps, combining the charm of a living mountain village with a genuine connection to alpine culture, heritage and community.
It’s a living, breathing, year-round mountain community with more than 700 permanent residents, lying at 1,400m at the gateway to Vanoise National Park, surrounded by spectacular scenery beneath La Grande Casse, the highest peak in Savoie.
More than 90% of guests here are French. And nearly half of all holidaymakers choose to explore the area in ways other than just skiing.
A true Alpine gem, Pralognan-la-Vanoise ski resort has been a legendary French mountain destination for more than 150 years. A birthplace of mountaineering, it now stands out as a premier hub for winter sports and real mountain experiences.
Far from major traffic routes, and offering a warm and family-friendly atmosphere, Pralognan also makes a point of extending a special welcome to its youngest visitors.
Uncrowded and unhurried skiing
Great skiing and spectacular scenery remain at the heart of the Pralognan experience, with uncrowded runs, skiing for all abilities and stunning scenery. The ski area is intimate with 26km of slopes for all levels, across 25 runs (9 green, 3 blue, 8 red and 5 black), served by 12 lifts, and with 1,000m of vertical.
With a 9,000-hectare playground among the unspoilt landscapes of the Vanoise National Park, Pralognan is also a ski tourer’s paradise. Dominated by La Grande Casse and the largest ice cap in the Alps, it’s a vast, silent domain offering breathtaking panoramas. Guided excursions are offered for both new and experienced ski-tourers, along with opportunities to spend a night in a mountain refuge.
Discover loads of non-ski activities
But a Pralognan-la-Vanoise ski holiday is about more than skiing, with opportunities to discover local traditions, culture, heritage, delicious local cuisine and mountain life through experiences available both on and off the slopes. It’s altogether a more rounded take on the French Alps.
The breadth of winter experiences here goes beyond downhill skiing, and ski touring, and includes Nordic skiing, snowshoeing, wellness facilities and family-friendly activities, with an immersive twist.
Families can try butter making, an evening gourmet walk, a snowshoe outing that’s focused on mountain safety, igloo building, a curling experience at the Olympic ice rink, and a 10-stop heritage trail to discover the history and heritage of the village.
The village’s central hub, Le Cristal, features: a swimming pool, water slide, spa, bowling alley, weight room, climbing wall, Olympic-sized ice rink and curling rink. There are also opportunities to try ski-joring (skiing behind a horse), dog sledding, laser tag, paragliding, stargazing evenings, and – new for this winter – axe throwing!
