Thanks to recent heavy snowfalls, Val Thorens will be opening this weekend. There is 40cm in resort, and a very skiable 60cm of powder up top (3,200m).

Being one of Europe's highest resorts, Val Thorens - part of the massive 3 valleys ski area, along with Courchevel and Meribel - is often open before most.

With this year's early snowfall it is again, one of the first resorts in France to open, starting with a very reasonable 15 pistes serviced by 12 lifts this Saturday 22nd November - and possibly more if it carries on snowing.

But it's not just Val Thorens that's open.....

Light snow fell in Austria last weekend, seeing Obergurgl join the list of Austrian resorts that are already open, which include Hintertuxer, Stubaier Glacier and Solden.

Switzerland also saw a good dump of snow through the latter part of last week and into the weekend. Zermatt now has 21 lifts running, while there's great skiing to be had high-up on the glacier in Saas-Fee.

Cervinia currently has the best skiing in the Italian Alps, with the majority of its pistes already open (including the link over to Zermatt). The pistes were refreshed on Tuesday evening with 5cm of fresh snow to top up the earlier snow falls.

All in all, it's looking promising for some good pre-Christmas turns.
