Their versatility and ability to handle variable conditions
Struggle a little on harder packed snow

Swiss company Movement specialise in freeriding skis and their touring range, Alp Tracks, is now three years into its life and gaining fans rapidly. The 84mm version is designed specifically for women and is the narrowest in the whole range that includes five models and goes up to a 106mm version.

We often find Movement skis understeer, it's a typical characteristic that runs through much of the collection and suits many freeride skiers, although we struggle to get to grips with the style in general. But The Alp Tracks 84 are really exciting, not because the engineering process has created such lightweight skis, but also because the performance holds up in all kinds of variable snow conditions, particularly excelling in shallow, soft snow.

As the snow gets deeper they do require a little more floatation, but if you stay light and vary the turns they handle it all perfectly well providing your technique is up to it. Even in heavier crud, they seem to cut through it all with ease, although when it becomes more solid and doesn't break through, or icy, we struggle to keep a decent edge grip, due to the weight of the skis. This is a compromise worth making.

They are perfect for those longer day and multi-day ski tours - Haute Route would be a good example.

We are really impressed with the Alp Tracks 84 and they come in as one of our top skis for the 2018 winter season. We like the look of them too.
