We always enjoyed the Motive range of all-mountain skis from Fischer, and when its new replacement arrived, our hopes were high. Fortunately we were not disappointed.

There are four models in the range with the 77 version being geared towards a recreational skier, possibly looking to buy their first set of skis.

Naturally, it is relatively easy to steer in the turn initiation phase, but there's a surprisingly tasty grip in the tail that provides oodles of confidence on harder packed snow.

Despite falling into our all-mountain category, essentially the 77 waist makes them more suited to groomed pistes than deep powder - but they are more than capable of handling some variable terrain should you feel the need to leave the comfort zone between the marker poles. We found them particularly forgiving in loose, chopped up snow and smaller sized moguls.

As we'd expect from Fischer, construction is solid and the build quality feels a little like shutting a door on a Bentley - okay, a BMW then, ski writers don't get to play with Bentley's, ever. The wood core and all-mountain Rocker might be common fare these days but at £360 including bindings, it feels like you're getting BMW quality for the price of second-hand Ford Fiesta.

If you're still renting skis but considering stepping up to ownership, enjoy the piste but like to dip in and out a little, then the Fischer Pro Mtn 77 would make a good choice.
