Skiing hard and fast all over the mountain.
The slightly eye-watering price tag.

In the ever-expanding all mountain category of skis, Kästle's contributions have continued to stand out from season to season and the MX84 is no exception.

While some of its competitors have pushed the boundaries of ski design through the use of high-tech modern materials, Kästle has been efficiently following the path of progression rather than revolution.

Last season the MX83 had one centimetre added to its width to become the MX84 and, despite what seems like a rather small tweak, the Austrian manufacturer managed to make an already excellent ski even better.

This year's offering is unchanged - other than an updated paint job - and under the top sheet there remains two sheets of titanal matched with a dense silver fir wood core that has plenty in common with a high end GS race ski, an impression backed up by a traditional full camber.

So unsurprisingly the MX84 is incredibly stable on groomers and hard pack, with an edge hold to match, but it is just as confidence-inspiring away from the piste.

We were blessed with some epic snow conditions during this year's test in Galtür and so we were able to charge the MX84 from piste to powder to crud and back again all in the space of a few hundred metres.

Even with the transition between surfaces, you just don't feel the need to back off with the MX84 like you would with many skis. In fact you feel like stamping the accelerator flat to the floor and screaming with joy. Our testers tended to deliver their verdicts using one word - "superb", "outstanding" and "yay!" being heard.

Does the MX84 have limitations? Well yes. It's not for you if you prefer a poppy, agile ski that you can lark around with in the powder, or a ski that can you edge nimbly from side to side cranking out short turns.

The other drawback is the hefty Kästle price tag, but like the Stella Artois advertising slogan used to say, it's "reassuringly expensive". You get what you pay for and what you pay for with the MX84 is an incredible all mountain ride.
