Great range of motion and a quality feel
The gaiters take some effort to position and the sizing isn't generous

The Icemania Pant is one of Salomon's bestselling pants in both the men and women's models, and it's easy to see why. They do what they say on the tin, offering comfort and protection for any piste skier.

These pants come in 8 different colour options, so you'll be able to find something to your taste. We tested the white version and found them to be flattering and understated, but they're inevitably easy to get dirty after a hard day on the mountain and trudging through resort.

The outer fabric itself has a nice quality feel to it, and has a 4-way stretch to provide maximum ease of movement. This together with the 'MotionFit' cut makes them extremely comfortable and means they don't pull in any uncomfortable places while you're doing your thing. An adjustable strip at the back also does a good job of customizing the fit around the waist.

One note on the sizing is that you may need a bigger size than you think. We found that a large was only just big enough for a UK size 14 woman. However, we did like that they come in different length options, and found that the regular length was just right in both ski boots and snow boots.

The outer shell is an 'AvancedSkin Dry10/10' fabric, making it both waterproof and breathable. The fully taped seams also help to keep you dry. A layer of 60g/m2 synthetic 'AdvancedSkin Warm' insulation inside offers warmth without bulk, and we didn't notice any cold legs on chairlifts.

Extra patches of heavy-duty fabric on the inside lower leg provide some extra protection from getting knocked about by skis and boots, and a similar strip on the cuff at the back in case it get's caught in bindings or dragged along the pavement. The lining is made of both fleece and a smooth nylon for next to skin comfort and to make getting the pants on and off a doddle.

The leg gaiters have very tight elastic and stuck to our boots like glue, keeping the snow and wind out, but they don't open down the sides, so it was a struggle to get them over ski boots. We liked the fact that the waist has a popper, zip and hook fastening so they stay firmly done up. There are only 2 pockets, but they are zipped, and big enough to comfortably fit a large phone. However, due to the snug fit and placement on the upper thigh, it's unlikely that you'd actually want to store anything with more bulk than a piste map in them.
