British Columbia is the home of big mountain skiing and destinations don’t come much bigger than the likes of Whistler, Revelstoke, Panorama, Sun Peaks and Kicking Horse, resorts that loom large in the mythology of winter sports. A trip to the one of these resorts is more than just a holiday, it’s an immersion in nature.

Skiers come here to discover the freedom of skiing without limits and return home having learned something new about themselves.

Ski Independence, as its name suggests, is all about finding that independent streak within each and every one of us and expressing it on the most magnificent mountains in North America.

But which one of these heavy-hitting resorts should you pick for your next ski getaway? Here's a rundown to help you decide...

Whistler 2021.jpg

Whistler

Best for: Big season, huge slopes, great town

Whistler is widely known for its world class skiing. It’s the largest ski area in North America, and has a massive variety of incredible terrain, a lengthy ski season, and three villages full of great restaurants and accommodation.

A couple of inside tips for skiers; take a trip down ‘Bear Paw’, for an easy black run that no-one skis on Whistler and give ‘Ridge Runner’ into ‘Twist and Shout’ a go on Blackcomb, a great blue run filled with swooping turns & rollers.

You’ll never be bored in Whistler, even when you’re giving your ski legs a rest. Find great places to eat and drink, such as Mexican Corner and the Mallard Bar at the Fairmont Chateau Whistler, take it easy with a massage or relax around a firepit at the Scandinave Spa or keep active and try tubing at the Whistler Blackcomb Coca-Cola Tube Park.

Revy 2.jpg

Revelstoke

Best for: Biggest Vertical

Revelstoke is known for more than just dumps of snow. It’s seemingly endless vertical is more than enough to get stoked for Revy. At 1713 metres, this isn’t just the biggest vertical in British Columbia, but the whole of North America.

There’s also plenty of great off-piste skiing in Revelstoke, but if that’s not your thing, there’s 75 runs to keep you amused. The 10 mile run will have your legs burning, and to top it off, there’s also cat-skiing and heli-skiing which both depart from the base of the resort.

Panorama.jpg

Panorama

Best for: Great slopes

It’s all about balance. Panorama has been awarded number 1 for Trail Comfort in the 2019 list of the world’s 100 largest ski areas by European researcher Skimeilen. But what does that mean? Think wide open ski trails and ski lifts that have little or no queues.

Panorama has 2975 acres of terrain, and you’ll find anything from wide open fall-line cruisers to powder filled tree lines, and everything in between – Not forgetting the exhilarating Taynton Bowl.

Plus, Panorama is finding new terrain and constantly expanding every year. For winter 19-20 another four huge, steep and deep, double-black diamond runs have been added to the East side of Taynton Bowl.

Sun Peaks 201.jpg

Sun Peaks

Best for: All round skiing

With a similar theme to Panorama, Sun Peaks offers the best of everything you could possibly be looking for. Diverse terrain with impeccably groomed slopes, minimal crowds, a family friendly mountain and ski-through village with plenty of ski in/ski out accommodation. All within the second largest resort in Canada.

There's no shortage of unforgettable experiences at Sun Peaks. Don't miss the taking an Alpine Fondue Starlight Descent where you'll head up the mountain after the slopes have cleared, watch the sunset over the peaks while you enjoy a wonderful Swiss dining experience and then ski back down the moonlit piste. Want to give your skis a rest? Try a backcountry dogsled tour or take a ride on one of the resort's Cat Trax piste groomers.

Kicking Horse.jpg

Kicking Horse

Best for: a unique experience

Kicking Horse has many claims to fame, with the resort offering much more than just huge verticals and miles of slopes. First, Kicking Horse is home to some of the most amazing snow you’ll find in British Columbia. Think light, dry, smooth powder.

You’ll also only need to take one gondola to reach the summit of Kicking Horse, something they claim you can do nowhere else. At the top, you’ll find the highest dining experience in Canada. Enjoy dinner at 7700 feet surrounded by views of the Rocky Mountains and spectacular surrounding national parks.
